FLYOVER CONSTRUCTION

A flyover is a crossing of two high ways or of a highway, pedestrian path or railroad at different levels where clearance traffic on the lower level is obtained by elevating the higher level. Also known as overpass,a flyover is simply a bridge that crosses another road or rail path.

The world's first railway flyover was actually constructed in 1843 by London and Croydon railway at Norwood junction to carry its atmospheric railway vehicles over the Brighton main line.
The purpose of building flyovers was to mitigate traffic congestion.

But ironically,on-going construction of flyovers at some major cities has resulted in safety hazards for commuters due to increased traffic and other unsafe conditions.

Such road work usually involves digging, laying of pipelines, constructing culverts and erecting flyover bridge foundations on footpath, thus requiring strict safety precautions to be taken by the contractor. This is necessary, considering the scale of the project involved and the exposure of workers and commuters alike to unsafe conditions and hazards.

CONSTRUCTION

In the field of architecture and civil engineering, construction is the process that involves building and assembling infrastructure.Large scale construction is a feat of human multitasking. The job is managed by a project manager and supervised by a construction engineer.

RISK-ASSESSMENT

The HSE team defines risk assessment as a process that identifies the hazard associated with a particular activities/task and evaluation as regards the effect of exposure to these hazard level as possible.

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

Having established the task, the assessor must then identify the kind of hazard present.Hazard identification is aimed at determining potential risk associated with ant given assignment to be performed by an employee. It also involves identification of location ans associated risk.

SUPERVISION

Supervision is done generally by the person in charge otherwise called Foreman. It is essential to ensure the activity is completed as planned and to a safe system of work.

DIVERSION

A road diversion is always needed so that members of the public and related traffic do not come close to the flyover construction works. This control should first be considered during the design process. A road diversion may solve some questions, but cater needs to be taken to ensure that the volume and size of traffic diverted can easily.

ERECTING TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNS

Before road work activity commences, traffic control signs must be erected. These should alert the public to the upcoming job task. The signage work must be carefully planned.Detailed risk assessment should be carried out to ensure the adequate controls are implemented.

SECURITY

only authorized persons should be allowed into the construction sites.Trained security personnel can help in access control.
